Completed by the United States in 1914 after a failed French attempt, the Panama Canal cut a lock-based waterway across the isthmus, linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Its construction depended on large-scale earth-moving and on sanitary campaigns against malaria and yellow fever that made the work zone habitable. The United States administered a Canal Zone with planned company towns until the canal's transfer to Panama in 1999. Alongside Suez it confirmed the canal as a tool of geopolitical and urban restructuring, while its sanitary engineering became a model for tropical city planning.
