From the 1990s a generation of Dutch practices — MVRDV, UNStudio, West 8 and others, with OMA in the background — gained international prominence for research-led, data-driven and often provocative design, a tendency labelled 'SuperDutch'. MVRDV's analytical 'datascape' method and projects such as the Dutch pavilion at Expo 2000 in Hannover dramatised density and land scarcity as design problems. The work fused statistical reasoning with bold formal experiment. It reflected the planning-saturated Dutch context that produced it.
SuperDutch projected Dutch planning culture onto the global stage and influenced how density and land use are argued through design.
