Panini's Ashtadhyayi describes the whole of classical Sanskrit in roughly four thousand terse, ordered rules (sutras) that operate on a base of roots and affixes to generate correct words and forms. It uses meta-rules, abbreviation symbols, recursion and rule-ordering of a kind not matched in the West until modern formal logic and computer science. The work treats language as a rigorously generative system rather than a list of examples. It became the model for systematising knowledge across the South Asian intellectual tradition.
As the first fully formal description of a natural language, it pioneered the rule-based, generative method that underlies modern linguistics and computation. It exemplifies an Indian tradition of treating complex systems as ordered, derivable structures.
