The Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), launched in 2015, targeted basic urban infrastructure in around five hundred cities, prioritising water supply, sewerage, drainage, urban transport and green space. Unlike the earlier renewal mission it focused on universal coverage of core services rather than a few showcase projects, and tied funding to municipal reforms and credit-rating of cities. A second phase later emphasised water security and recycling. It ran alongside the Smart Cities Mission as the broader, services-led arm of national urban policy.
It refocused national urban investment on universal basic services and water infrastructure across a wide tier of cities.
