PMAY-Urban housing 2015

2015 · India

What it is

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), launched in 2015 with the goal of housing for all, structured central support around four verticals: in-situ slum redevelopment with private partners, credit-linked interest subsidy, affordable housing in partnership, and subsidy for beneficiary-led construction. It became one of the largest housing programmes in the world by sanctioned units, reshaping affordable-housing supply and peripheral township development. It folded earlier slum and housing schemes into a single mission. Critics note gaps between sanctioned, completed and occupied units, and peripheral location.

Why it matters

It is the flagship national affordable-housing mission, channelling mass subsidised housing supply and in-situ slum redevelopment at unprecedented scale.
