The Town and Country Planning Organisation (TCPO) was established in 1962 as the central government's technical and advisory arm on urban and regional planning. It prepared model planning legislation, regional and master plans, and national guidelines, and helped frame the model Town and Country Planning Act adopted in varying forms by the states. It later served as the nodal technical agency for national missions and urban data. As an apex advisory body it standardised planning practice across a federation where land and planning are state subjects.
It is the central technical body that diffused standardised master-planning method and model planning law across the Indian states.
