The steam locomotive and the public railway

What it is

The Stockton and Darlington (1825) and above all the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (1830) combined a steam locomotive, iron rails on a graded and largely level alignment, timetabled operation and a terminus with goods yards. Speeds of 30 to 50 km/h collapsed travel times between cities and made daily commuting over 15 to 30 km possible for the first time. Because trains need shallow gradients and generous curves, railways drove cuttings, embankments, viaducts and tunnels straight through existing urban fabric, clearing dense districts for termini and yards. Standard time, the season ticket and the suburban station followed.

Why it matters

The railway is the first technology to separate workplace from dwelling at metropolitan scale, producing the commuter suburb, the station town and the industrial corridor along the line. Termini, marshalling yards and viaducts reorganised the centres of London, Paris and Chicago, and the land they consumed became the raw material of late-20th-century regeneration. Its geometry still underlies transit-oriented development and polycentric regional planning.
