Wet-rice terracing and paddy hydraulics

What it is

Chinese cultivators turned steep, forested hillsides into stepped, water-retaining paddy fields, fed by gravity-driven channels that carry spring water down from forested ridges through villages to the terraces below. The Honghe Hani terraces in Yunnan, carved over roughly 1,300 years and cut in up to 3,000 steps on a single slope, are the classic surviving example, listed by UNESCO in 2013. The system couples forest, channel, village and field into one engineered landscape that recycles nutrients and water. Wet-rice paddy farming raised land productivity far above dry grain, allowing dense rural populations to settle marginal terrain.

Why it matters

Terraced paddy farming let intensely productive agriculture climb hill country, sustaining the dense rural settlement that underpinned Chinese and wider East and Southeast Asian urbanisation.
