Description

The Aarhus Letbane corridor programme links Denmark's first modern light-rail system, opened in 2017, with municipal planning by Aarhus Kommune for dense, mixed-use nodes along its route. The light rail connects the harbour-front and city centre with the university, hospital at Skejby and new urban districts such as Lisbjerg, which are planned as transit-served growth areas. The approach concentrates the city's substantial projected growth on station-adjacent sites rather than dispersed suburban expansion.

Significance

The programme is significant as a demonstration that transit-oriented development is viable in second-tier Nordic cities, not only capitals, and it re-established light rail in Denmark after decades of bus- and car-based planning. It is studied as a model of coupling rail investment with municipal land strategy in a mid-sized, growing city.
