Description
A draft revision of the statutory master plan for Bengaluru prepared by the Bangalore Development Authority from 2017, with a 2031 horizon. It sought to manage the explosive growth of India's leading technology metropolis by concentrating higher-density, mixed-use development along metro and suburban rail corridors, rationalising land use zoning across the conurbation and addressing infrastructure deficits in the rapidly urbanising periphery. The draft attracted extensive objections and was not brought into force in its original form.
Significance
The plan illustrates both the ambitions and the limits of master planning in fast-growing Indian metropolises, where statutory plans chronically lag actual urbanisation and much development proceeds outside them. Its corridor-based densification logic reflects the diffusion of transit-oriented development into Indian planning policy, while its stalled approval became a prominent example in debates over planning reform and metropolitan governance in Karnataka.
