Description

From the mid-2010s the Cundinamarca departmental government and the Bogotá city administration advanced complementary rail programmes: the Regiotram de Occidente, a suburban tram-train linking Bogotá with municipalities to its west, and the long-delayed Bogotá Metro, whose first elevated line was contracted in 2019. Together they add a rail layer to a metropolitan mobility system hitherto dominated by the TransMilenio bus rapid transit network. The plans operate at the scale of the Bogotá-Sabana region, integrating regional rail, metro and BRT.

Significance

These projects mark Bogotá's transition from its celebrated but strained BRT-only model towards a multimodal, regionally integrated transit system, a shift closely watched across Latin America. They also illustrate the governance challenge of coordinating city and departmental authorities in a metropolitan area lacking a unified government, a recurring theme in the region's planning debates.
