Description

An integrated mobility programme for Cali, Colombia, developed by the municipality from 2002, centred on the MIO (Masivo Integrado de Occidente) bus rapid transit network of trunk corridors, feeder routes and stations. The plan paired the BRT system with corridor upgrades, public-space improvements and reorganisation of the informal bus sector across the city.

Significance

Cali's MIO belongs to the wave of Colombian and Latin American BRT systems that followed Bogotá's TransMilenio, extending the model of citywide mobility overhaul to a secondary metropolis. Its implementation difficulties, including ridership shortfalls and conflict with remaining informal transport, have made it an instructive case in debates about transferring the BRT model and about coupling transit investment with broader urban upgrading.
