Description

A redevelopment plan for Deutzer Hafen, a former industrial harbour on the right bank of the Rhine opposite Cologne's city centre. Guided by the City of Cologne and its development company on the basis of a competition-winning masterplan, the scheme converts the harbour basin, quays and mill buildings into a dense mixed-use neighbourhood of housing, workplaces and public space, retaining the water basin and industrial landmarks as the centrepiece of the new quarter.

Significance

Deutzer Hafen belongs to the mature generation of European port-city conversions, applying lessons from earlier harbour regenerations to a mid-sized inner-city basin with an emphasis on mixed use, affordable housing quotas and climate-conscious design. For Cologne it represents the most important extension of the inner city across the Rhine, and it is often cited in German debates on productive, socially mixed waterfront districts.
