Description
The Carlsberg City District (Carlsberg Byen) redevelops the historic Carlsberg brewery grounds in Copenhagen's Vesterbro/Valby area following the brewer's relocation of production in 2008. Based on the competition-winning 'Our Space' masterplan by the Danish practice Entasis, and delivered from 2009 by the development company Carlsberg Byen P/S, it creates a dense, low-carbon mixed-use quarter of streets, squares and towers that reuses listed brewery buildings, served by a new S-train station opened on the site.
Significance
Carlsberg is a leading European example of dense, heritage-led conversion of industrial land within the existing city, deliberately conceived as a critique of the open, slab-based modernism of earlier Danish development in favour of a compact quarter of urban spaces. Its integration of a new rail station illustrates Copenhagen's continued coupling of intensification with transit, and the project features in debates on density, tall buildings and heritage in the Nordic city.
