Description
Córdoba's urban mobility plan of 2018, prepared by the municipality, sought to reorganise movement in one of Latin America's major interior cities around public transport and active travel. Its measures included strengthening trunk bus corridors, extending pedestrian priority in the dense central area, and building out cycling infrastructure to reduce dependence on the private car. The plan operates city-wide, linking transport policy to the structure of centralities and corridors.
Significance
The plan belongs to the wave of Latin American mobility planning that followed the celebrated bus-based systems of Curitiba and Bogotá, adapting corridor thinking to a car-oriented regional capital. Its significance lies less in formal innovation than in the shift of planning emphasis from road capacity to street reallocation and modal change. Like many such plans, its implementation has been uneven, feeding debates about political continuity and funding in Latin American transport reform.
