Description

A fifty-year strategic framework for Detroit published in 2012, produced through a philanthropically funded process with wide community engagement and carried forward by the Detroit Future City organisation. Rather than assuming renewed growth, the framework accepts long-term population loss and proposes differentiated land-use typologies, converting extensive vacant land to blue and green infrastructure, urban agriculture and landscape uses while concentrating investment in viable employment and neighbourhood districts. It is advisory rather than statutory.

Significance

Detroit Future City is the landmark American plan for the shrinking city, breaking with the growth assumption embedded in conventional comprehensive planning. It has strongly influenced thinking on legacy cities, vacancy and landscape-led adaptation, while also drawing criticism over questions of equity, triage and who decides which neighbourhoods receive investment.
