Description

A masterplan launched in 2019 by the Diriyah Gate Development Authority for a new urban quarter on the north-western edge of Riyadh, surrounding the UNESCO-listed mud-brick district of At-Turaif, the ancestral seat of the Saudi state. The plan creates a large heritage-led development in Najdi architectural style, combining museums, cultural institutions, hospitality, retail and residential quarters with pedestrian-oriented streets. It is one of the Saudi giga-projects delivered under Vision 2030.

Significance

Diriyah Gate exemplifies the use of heritage as the organising theme for state-led urban mega-development, deploying vernacular architectural language at an unprecedented scale to construct national identity and a tourism economy. It sits within debates on authenticity and themed environments in Gulf urbanism, and marks Saudi Arabia's turn from purely modernist expansion towards culture-led place-making.
