Description
A long-range master plan framework for Guangzhou prepared by the municipal planning authorities around 2017, looking towards 2040 (subsequently folded into the 2035 territorial plan cycle). It structures the metropolis through development belts and corridors linking the historic core, the Tianhe and Pazhou new business districts and Nansha on the coast, paired with an ecological axis along the Pearl River and a network of protected green wedges. The plan positions Guangzhou within the emerging Greater Bay Area conurbation.
Significance
The plan exemplifies the corridor-and-axis structural planning of large Chinese cities, in which growth is choreographed along transit spines while river and mountain systems are cast as ecological counterweights. It also registers the scalar shift of Chinese planning in the 2010s from single-city expansion to polycentric mega-region co-ordination across the Pearl River Delta, one of the world's largest urbanised regions.
