Description
An Internationale Bauausstellung (international building exhibition) staged by Hamburg between 2006 and 2013, run by the city-owned IBA Hamburg GmbH and focused on Wilhelmsburg, a large island district in the Elbe inhabited by a diverse, relatively poor population. Around its three themes—Cosmopolis, Metrozones and Cities and Climate Change—the IBA delivered dozens of experimental projects, including energy-producing buildings, retrofitted flood-resilient housing, an 'Energy Bunker', and the transformation of inner-periphery 'metrozone' spaces, alongside the parallel international garden show.
Significance
IBA Hamburg extended the German building-exhibition tradition, associated with the Weissenhofsiedlung and IBA Emscher Park, into the era of climate adaptation and migration-shaped urbanism. It is widely referenced as a method of scaled, time-limited experimentation across an existing district rather than on cleared land, though critics have debated its gentrification effects on Wilhelmsburg's residents.
