Description

Hyllie is a planned district on the southern edge of Malmö, developed by the city from 2006 around a new underground station on the Citytunneln line linking Malmö to Copenhagen across the Øresund bridge. The plan arranges a dense mixed-use centre, including an arena, exhibition centre, shopping centre and office and housing quarters, around the station square, with ambitious targets for renewable energy and climate-smart infrastructure. It effectively creates a second city centre positioned to serve the cross-border Øresund region.

Significance

Hyllie is a clear European example of transit-oriented development harnessed to cross-border regional integration, translating the Øresund connection into concrete urban form. It is frequently cited in Scandinavian planning discourse for its climate contract between city and energy utilities, and it extends Malmö's post-industrial reinvention begun at the Western Harbour.
