Description
The Quartier des Spectacles plan, pursued by the Ville de Montréal from 2007, redeveloped the public realm of the city's historic entertainment district around Place des Arts and the lower Saint-Laurent corridor. The programme created a linked sequence of squares and promenades, including the Place des Festivals, engineered to host major events such as the jazz festival, and introduced a distinctive identity of illuminated signage and projections alongside cultural venues and private development. It consolidated roughly a square kilometre of downtown as a designated cultural and festival district.
Significance
The Quartier des Spectacles is a frequently cited model of culture-led regeneration organised around programmable public space rather than a single flagship building. It demonstrates the deliberate design of the city as a stage for festivals and lighting-based placemaking, while prompting debate about the displacement of the district's older, grittier uses and the branding of urban culture.
