Description

Perspective Munich (Perspektive München) is the City of Munich's ongoing strategic development concept, first adopted by the city council in 1998 and substantially updated in 2013. Rather than a land-use map, it is a framework of guiding principles and thematic strategies built around the motto 'compact, urban, green', steering housing supply, densification, mobility and open-space policy in one of Germany's fastest-growing and most prosperous cities. It is implemented through guideline projects and periodic monitoring rather than a single fixed plan.

Significance

Perspective Munich exemplifies the turn in German planning towards continuous, consensus-based strategic frameworks in place of end-state master plans. Its compact-urban-green formula became a widely quoted shorthand for reconciling growth with quality of life, and the plan's longevity across political cycles is often highlighted in European strategic planning literature.
