Description
The Bagnoli–Coroglio programme in Naples, led from the 2010s by the national agency Invitalia with the city, plans the regeneration of the vast former Italsider steelworks site on the western coast of the city. The plan couples one of Italy's largest environmental remediation operations, on land and seabed contaminated by a century of heavy industry, with a new coastal park, beaches restored to public use, and mixed-use development on the cleared plateau.
Significance
Bagnoli is a touchstone case of post-industrial regeneration in Southern Europe, notable for the extreme difficulty of its remediation and for decades of contested, stalled governance that preceded the current commissioner-led model. It figures prominently in debates on state intervention in the Mezzogiorno and on whether coastal brownfields should return primarily to public landscape rather than real-estate development.
