Description

The Eco-Vallée project in the Plaine du Var, designated a French Opération d'Intérêt National in 2008 and managed by a dedicated public development agency (EPA Plaine du Var), reorganises the Var river valley inland from Nice. Across a territory of several thousand hectares it combines innovation districts such as Nice Méridia, a multimodal transport hub at Grand Arénas near the airport, new housing, and flood-risk and ecological management of the valley floor.

Significance

Eco-Vallée illustrates the French state's use of the OIN instrument to restructure a metropolitan hinterland, pairing economic-cluster ambitions with an explicitly ecological framing of a flood-prone river corridor. It is significant in debates on 'eco-urbanism' as branding versus substance, and as an attempt to redirect the Riviera's growth from coastal saturation towards a planned inland valley.
