Description
A planned modern service industry zone on reclaimed land at Qianhai Bay in western Shenzhen, established in 2010 to deepen economic cooperation with Hong Kong in finance, logistics and professional services. The plan couples a special institutional regime with an unusually deliberate urban design framework — including design codes, a water-structured landscape concept from an international competition, and dense, transit-served development parcels — to build a high-intensity waterfront business district from scratch.
Significance
Qianhai is significant both as an instrument of Shenzhen–Hong Kong integration within the Greater Bay Area project and as a Chinese new district that took urban design codes and landscape structure seriously from the outset. It is studied as a test of whether institutional experimentation and design governance can together produce a legible, liveable financial district, in contrast to the generic towers-on-superblocks pattern of many earlier Chinese zones.
