Description
The Shanghai North Bund regeneration, pursued from the 2010s by Hongkou District, transforms a historic stretch of docks, warehouses and shipping-company land on the north bank of the Huangpu River opposite Lujiazui. The plan combines a new high-rise business skyline with a continuous waterfront public realm, cultural venues and retained heritage fragments, completing a triangle of central riverfront districts with the historic Bund and Pudong.
Significance
The North Bund represents the latest wave of Shanghai's decades-long reconquest of the Huangpu riverfront for finance, culture and public space, extending a project begun with Pudong in the 1990s. It is significant in debates on waterfront regeneration in Chinese cities, particularly regarding the balance between corporate towers, public accessibility and the maritime heritage of former dockland districts.
