Description
Guangming Science City is a state-planned research district in northern Shenzhen, developed from 2019 under the city's planning and natural resources authorities. The plan clusters major national science facilities, university campuses and corporate research and development around compact urban cores, set within a green landscape frame, aiming to pair laboratory campuses with full urban life rather than an isolated science park. It forms part of Shenzhen's designated comprehensive national science centre.
Significance
The plan exemplifies China's shift from manufacturing-led special zones to state-orchestrated basic-research urbanism, extending Shenzhen's role in the Greater Bay Area innovation strategy.
