Built largely in the 16th century within a walled enclosure in the Wadi Hadhramaut of Yemen, Shibam packs some five hundred mud-brick tower-houses of five to eight storeys onto a tight grid, rising sheer from the desert floor — earning it the nickname 'the Manhattan of the desert.' Verticality concentrated the population defensively on a compact, floodable site.
Shibam is the earliest example of planned high-rise vertical urbanism, achieving dense, multi-storey living entirely in earthen construction centuries before the steel skyscraper. It expands the global story of density beyond the modern Western city.
Largely rebuilt after a catastrophic 1532–3 flood and still inhabited today, retaining its 16th-century walled grid of mud-brick tower-houses; a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982, now endangered by flooding, erosion and the effects of conflict.
Conservation scholars warn that abandonment of traditional lime-mud maintenance regimes and climate-driven flooding threaten the towers, exposing the fragility of celebrating Shibam as a static 'eco-city' icon while the living maintenance culture erodes.
