Description

Skolkovo (from 2010) was launched outside Moscow as a planned innovation city and technology hub — a Russian 'Silicon Valley' with a university, research institutes, and start-ups in a master-planned campus-city intended to diversify the economy.

Significance

Skolkovo is a state-driven example of the innovation-city model, testing whether a government can plan an entrepreneurial tech ecosystem into existence on a greenfield site.
