Description

An urban renewal programme led by the City of Sydney from around 2012 for Green Square, a former industrial district south of the city centre. The plan concentrates high-density housing around the existing Green Square railway station and a purpose-built town centre, equipped with a library, plaza, aquatic centre and other civic facilities, alongside drainage and open-space works on low-lying land. At its launch it was described as the largest urban renewal area in Australia.

Significance

Green Square is a key Australian test of station-focused densification delivered by a municipality through civic investment rather than a single flagship development. Its intense residential densities and initially limited transport capacity have made it central to national debates about infrastructure sequencing, developer contributions and liveability in high-density renewal areas.
