Traffic-calmed neighborhood cells

Why it matters

Adapts Barcelona idea in Vienna

Description

The Supergrätzl programme, piloted by the City of Vienna from 2020 with a first full pilot in the dense Favoriten district, adapts Barcelona's superblock model to the Viennese street grid. Within a cell of several blocks, through motor traffic is filtered out by modal filters and diagonal barriers while residents retain access, and reclaimed roadway is converted to greening, seating and play space, with temporary tactical layouts tested before permanent redesign.

Significance

The pilots are significant as a leading example of the international migration of the superblock concept, translated into a policy framework in a city better known for housing than street reform. They connect Vienna's social-urbanism tradition to contemporary agendas of climate adaptation, heat mitigation and child-friendly streets, and inform European debates on scaling neighbourhood traffic reduction from pilot cells to citywide networks.
