Description
The Vilnius Station District transformation, launched around 2020 by the state railway infrastructure company LTG Infra with the City of Vilnius, redevelops the Lithuanian capital's main rail node and its surroundings. Anchored by the international 'Green Connect' design competition won by Zaha Hadid Architects, it rebuilds the station as a bridge-like public concourse spanning the tracks, reconnects severed districts north and south of the railway, and pairs the gateway with public-realm upgrades and regeneration of the surrounding quarter, in step with Rail Baltica investment.
Significance
The project typifies the current European wave of station-district planning, in which rail nodes are remade as connective public buildings and levers for inner-city regeneration rather than mere terminals. For Vilnius it carries capital-city symbolism, upgrading a Soviet-era gateway into an emblem of Baltic integration with the European rail network, and it features in debates on competition-led design culture and state–municipal delivery partnerships.
