Description

A mixed-use quarter developed from 2006 on former railway land immediately beside Zurich main station, planned jointly by SBB Immobilien, the property arm of the Swiss federal railways, and the City of Zurich. Built in phases to designs by several architectural practices, Europaallee combined offices, a university of teacher education, housing, hotels and retail along a new pedestrian spine linking the station to the Langstrasse district.

Significance

Europaallee became the Swiss benchmark for rail-led urban development, showing how a state railway can act as long-term developer of central station lands. It is cited in debates on transit-oriented densification in wealthy European cities, and equally in controversies over affordability and the corporate character of station quarters, which made it a target of Zurich housing activism.
