Description
A riverside regeneration programme launched in 2019 under the patronage of Ethiopia's Prime Minister's Office with the Addis Ababa city administration, addressing the degraded rivers that thread through the capital. The plan creates green-blue corridors along the Sheger river system, combining river cleaning, banks stabilisation, linear parks, walkways and public spaces, with early flagship components delivered in the city centre. It operates at the scale of many kilometres of river corridor crossing the whole city.
Significance
The project is one of the most prominent environmental and public-realm initiatives in contemporary Sub-Saharan African urbanism, signalling a shift from infrastructure-only development towards landscape-led city improvement. It has also fed debates about top-down beautification, displacement of riverside informal settlements, and the role of national political leadership in shaping capital-city space.
