Description
Busan Eco Delta City is a new smart-city district under development from 2019 on the delta of the Nakdong River at the western edge of Busan, led by the national water agency K-water together with the city. Conceived as a 'smart water city', the plan organises a large mixed-use urban extension around water management, with a national smart-city pilot district testing digital infrastructure, robotics, water-energy systems and data-driven services. It combines flood-adaptive engineering of the delta landscape with housing, research and logistics functions at metropolitan scale.
Significance
The project is one of Korea's two national smart-city pilot sites and has become a widely cited demonstration of how smart-city technology can be fused with water-sensitive and resilient urban design. It sits within a longer East Asian lineage of state-led new-town building, updated for the platform era, and has fed international debates about whether technology-first districts deliver genuine urbanity or primarily serve as showcases for national industrial policy.
