Description

Dholavira was a major city of the Indus Valley civilisation, built from around 2650 BCE on the arid island of Khadir in the Rann of Kutch in present-day Gujarat, India. The city was organised in a tripartite layout of citadel, middle town and lower town, enclosed by fortification walls and set within a chain of monumental stone-lined reservoirs. Its inhabitants captured and stored seasonal water from two flanking streams through an integrated system of dams, channels, reservoirs and stepwells, allowing a large settlement to flourish in a near-desert environment.

Significance

Dholavira is widely regarded as possessing the most sophisticated water-harvesting system of the ancient world, and it demonstrates that hydraulic engineering could be the organising principle of an entire city rather than an afterthought. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it stands alongside Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa as evidence of the Indus tradition of deliberate, infrastructure-led urbanism, and it remains a touchstone in debates about climate adaptation and water-sensitive planning in early cities.
