Description
A municipal redevelopment of Edmonton's decommissioned City Centre Airport into a dense, mixed-use district planned for tens of thousands of residents, led by the City of Edmonton from 2014 onwards. The plan is organised around a district energy sharing system, carbon-neutral targets, stormwater-integrated open space, and walkable, transit-served neighbourhoods on a large inner-city brownfield. It is one of the most ambitious municipally driven net-zero districts in North America.
Significance
Blatchford matters as a test of whether a mid-sized North American city government can itself deliver an eco-district of European ambition, rather than leaving sustainability innovation to private developers.
