Why it matters

Description

Konza Technopolis (from 2012) is a planned 'smart city' and technology hub being built on greenfield land south of Nairobi, master-planned with phased districts, a university, and digital infrastructure to anchor a Kenyan knowledge economy.

Significance

Konza is a prominent African new-city and tech-hub experiment, embodying both the continent's ambition to leapfrog into the knowledge economy and the recurring risks of greenfield smart-city schemes.

What became of it

Under construction and well behind schedule: core infrastructure, a data centre and the Konza Complex/university campus are progressing, but the 'Silicon Savannah' remains largely unbuilt and only sparsely populated.

Critique

Criticised as a costly, slow-moving prestige project whose tech-city ambitions have so far far outrun actual investment and occupancy.
