Description

A masterplan begun in 2006 by the municipality of Utrecht, under the CU2030 banner, to rebuild the area around Utrecht Centraal, the busiest railway station in the Netherlands. The plan replaced the introverted 1970s Hoog Catharijne complex-and-station ensemble with a new public transport terminal, reconnected pedestrian routes, a renewed shopping and office quarter, and the restoration of the Catharijnesingel canal, which had been filled in for a motorway in the 1970s.

Significance

CU2030 is regarded as a model Dutch station-area transformation, showing how a national rail hub, commercial redevelopment and public-realm repair can be orchestrated over decades. The re-watering of the Catharijnesingel became an internationally cited emblem of reversing car-era planning decisions, and the project informs wider European practice on station districts as dense, walkable city pieces.
