Description
Corridor development plans prepared by the Addis Ababa city administration from 2015 around the Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit, the first modern light rail system in sub-Saharan Africa, built with Chinese finance and opened that year. The plans sought to redevelop and intensify land along the two LRT lines, coordinating housing, markets and public space with the new infrastructure in a rapidly growing capital.
Significance
These plans represent the first sustained attempt at transit-oriented urbanism in sub-Saharan Africa, testing whether corridor planning models could be transplanted to a context of informal land markets and rapid urbanisation. The mixed operational record of the LRT and the uneven redevelopment around it have made Addis Ababa a key case in debates on infrastructure-led African urbanism and Chinese-financed transit.
