Description
Diyar Al Muharraq is a large mixed-use new town built from 2006 onwards on reclaimed land off the northern coast of Muharraq in Bahrain, developed by the eponymous private company. The masterplan organises a series of artificial islands into residential neighbourhoods, waterfront promenades, commercial centres, mosques and community facilities, with a stated aim of providing housing across income groups, including social housing delivered with the Bahraini government. At full build-out it is planned to accommodate a population in the range of a small city.
Significance
The project illustrates how Gulf land-reclamation urbanism has been adapted to national housing agendas rather than purely luxury markets, distinguishing it from some neighbouring island schemes. It features in debates about the environmental costs of dredging and reclamation in the Gulf, and about whether developer-led new towns can deliver genuinely inclusive communities.
