Description

GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City), initiated by the Government of Gujarat from 2007, is a greenfield central business district on the Sabarmati riverbank between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. Conceived around India's first International Financial Services Centre, the plan proposes a dense, high-rise, mixed-use core supported by advanced shared infrastructure, including district cooling, automated waste collection and utility tunnels, within a special economic zone framework. It is a state-led project developed through a dedicated company at the scale of a new urban district.

Significance

GIFT City belongs to the global family of purpose-built financial districts and 'smart city' enclaves, marking India's attempt to compete with hubs such as Dubai and Singapore through a designed regulatory and physical environment. It has figured prominently in debates over enclave urbanism, the gap between rendered ambition and realised fabric, and the use of financial-services clustering as an anchor for new urban centres.
