Description
Hudson Yards (master plan 2009) decked over an active Manhattan rail yard to build a wholly new high-rise district of office towers, luxury housing, a mall, and the Vessel landmark — the largest private real-estate development in US history.
Significance
Hudson Yards is the defining contemporary American megaproject, showcasing the engineering feat of building over infrastructure and the debates over privatized public space, tax incentives, and elite-oriented city-building.
What became of it
Partly realised: the eastern rail-yard phase (towers, the Vessel, the Shed, retail and High Line links) opened in 2019, but the western yard and full residential build-out remain incomplete.
Critique
Criticised as a publicly subsidised luxury enclave that delivered little affordable housing and limited public benefit relative to its tax breaks.
