Description
West Berlin's IBA (1979–87) building exhibition pursued 'critical reconstruction,' repairing the war- and modernism-scarred city through careful infill that restored historic street lines and block structure, alongside celebrated experimental social housing by international architects.
Significance
IBA Berlin reframed urban renewal as healing the existing city rather than clearing it, championing contextual infill and 'cautious urban renewal.' It was hugely influential on European thinking about repairing damaged urban fabric.

Realised across several West Berlin districts, it established 'critical reconstruction' and 'careful urban renewal' as internationally influential models.
Critique
Its emphasis on architectural set-pieces sometimes overshadowed the social-housing and resident-retention goals of careful renewal.
