Description
Paddington Basin, later branded Paddington Waterside, regenerated the neglected Grand Union Canal basin and surrounding railway lands beside Paddington Station in central London. Coordinated from 1998 by the Paddington Waterside Partnership, an alliance of landowners, developers and public bodies, the scheme delivered high-density offices, housing, hotels and healthcare facilities around new canal-side public spaces, bridges and towpath improvements.
Significance
The development was an early instance of London's inner-city waterside renewal beyond Docklands, showing that obsolete canal infrastructure near a major terminus could support dense commercial growth. It helped establish the partnership-led, multi-landowner model of regeneration that characterised subsequent London opportunity areas.
