What it is

From the 1970s to the 1990s, the standardised ISO shipping container reshaped global trade as port after port switched to containerised handling and ships grew steadily larger. Cranes, gantries and computerised yards replaced gangs of dockworkers, slashing the time and cost of loading and unloading. The need for deep water and vast container yards pushed terminals away from cramped historic city-centre docks to new sites on the urban edge.

Why it matters

It hollowed out historic dockland quarters across the world, freeing them for waterfront regeneration into housing, offices and culture, while rewiring the geography of trade around a handful of giant hub ports.
