From the 2nd century BCE the Romans imposed centuriation across conquered territories: a vast grid of land division surveyed into squares (centuriae) of about 710 metres, complete with roads, drainage ditches, and property boundaries set on one continuous orthogonal system. Colonists received standardized plots within it, fixing settlement, agriculture, and taxation into a single rational template stamped onto whole regions.
Centuriation is the first planning at territorial scale — the ancestor of every gridded land-division system from the US Public Land Survey to suburban subdivision. Astonishingly durable, its lines still organize fields and roads across Italy and Tunisia more than two thousand years later.
Implemented from the 2nd c. BCE onward across colonised territory; many grid lines, roads, drainage ditches and field boundaries fossilised into the modern landscape and remain legible in the Po Plain and parts of Tunisia today.
Reconstructed grid extents rely heavily on aerial/cadastral palimpsest interpretation, and the survival and dating of individual centuriated zones is often debated.
