Description

The Rheinauhafen redevelopment, carried out by the City of Cologne between roughly 2002 and 2011, converted a nineteenth-century customs harbour on the Rhine just south of the old town into a mixed-use quarter of offices, housing, culture and leisure. Historic warehouses were retained and refurbished alongside new construction, with a continuous public promenade along the water. Its best-known element is the trio of Kranhaus buildings, whose cantilevered forms echo the harbour cranes and gave the city a new riverfront silhouette.

Significance

Rheinauhafen is a characteristic example of the wave of post-industrial waterfront regeneration that reshaped European river and port cities from the 1990s onward. Its combination of heritage retention with iconic new architecture illustrates how mid-sized cities used such projects to reposition their image, and it fed wider debates about the affordability and social mix of high-value waterfront quarters.
