Description
A masterplan initiated in 2006 by the Abu Dhabi developer Aldar Properties for Yas Island, a large island east of Abu Dhabi city conceived as an entertainment, sports and tourism destination. The plan organised the island around anchor attractions—the Yas Marina Formula 1 circuit, Ferrari World, a waterpark, golf, marinas and hotel districts—with later phases adding residential communities and retail. It exemplifies single-owner development of an entire island territory.
Significance
Yas Island illustrates the Gulf model of state-capitalist megaproject urbanism, in which government-linked developers build event- and leisure-driven districts to diversify oil economies and brand the city internationally. It is discussed as a leading case of tourism-led city-making and of the entrepreneurial urbanism of Abu Dhabi's Vision 2030 era, while raising familiar questions about enclave development and labour conditions.
