The stepwell is a South Asian water-architecture type in which long flights of steps descend several storeys to reach the fluctuating water table of a well or tank. Developed across the arid west of the subcontinent, the deepest and most ornate examples, such as the eleventh-century Rani-ki-Vav at Patan, combine reliable water storage with cool subterranean galleries, shrines and sculpture. The form let communities draw water year-round despite extreme seasonal variation and doubled as social and ritual space. It is a distinctive civic infrastructure with no close parallel in other building traditions.
Stepwells solved the problem of seasonal water supply in dry regions while creating monumental public space, integrating infrastructure, climate response and civic life. They remain a globally singular contribution to the architecture of water.
